Kiln building workshop on the Azores

with Renato Costa e Silva

The art of building kilns

Self-taught, Renato is more than a ceramics sculptor. He is also a kiln builder, an author, a teacher and an explorer. An expert in clay and ceramics from the Azores, he is happy to share his passion and knowledge through different workshops. This workshop focusing on the construction of rudimentary ceramic kilns enables students to experience the thrill of firing their own pieces. It provides the opportunity to learn how to fire ceramics without having to buy the most expensive piece of equipment – the kiln. Participants will learn to construct three different types of small kiln such as the paper kiln, gas kiln and wood firing kiln. The workshops take place either in Cedeira or Angra do Heroismo
