Introduction to ceramics in Portugal

with Renato Costa e Silva

An introduction to ceramics

Self-taught, Renato is more than a ceramics sculptor. He is also a kiln builder, an author, a teacher and an explorer. An expert in clay and ceramics from the Azores, he is happy to share his passion and knowledge through different workshops. This workshop can be structured in five days or two weekends depending on the participant’s schedule. The first day covers hand building techniques such as rolls, slabs and modelling. Participants are then introduced to mould making and working at the potter’s wheel. The final days are spent glazing and firing, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the steps needed to create a ceramic piece. The workshops take place either in Cerdeira – Home for Creativity, or in Angra do Heroismo.
