Homo Faber at London Craft Week 2025

Chairmaker Daniel Lizarralde Aguirre based in Spain & Spanish fellow Elena de Diego

Daniel is one of Spain’s last remaining artisans to practise the craft of handwoven chair caning, a tradition he learned from blind women at a local charity. Since 2015, through his workshop and academy, Zurjole, he has restored chairs using only manual techniques and trains new artisans with a clear mission: to preserve and pass on this endangered skill.

Elena, an advertising graduate, discovered chair restoration through a chance encounter with worn out wicker furniture and some nuns. Inspired by Daniel’s work, she spent two years learning hand caning and restoration. She is now aiming to deepen her skills and help ensure the survival of this nearly lost tradition.
