Tchushkarcheto is a family-owned company founded in 1998 by the inheritors of several generations of carpet weavers in the town of Chiprovtsi. Carpet weaving is deeply rooted in the local social and cultural life. Craft skills are transmitted informally from mothers and grandmothers to daughters, often while working at the loom. Here, carpet weaving goes hand in hand with beliefs, language and rituals. The weavers say prayers before starting on a new carpet, and sing and tell stories while working. In 2014 the tradition of carpet-making in Chiprovci was included in the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO.
Kilimi are the hand woven carpets made by the women living in Chiprovtsi, in the northwestern part of Bulgaria. The carpets are renowned for their specific ornamental motifs and colour. The high-quality carpets of Tchushkarcheto are entirely handmade and completely zero waste. The wool used is dyed by the team, and it is produced from their own sheep. The team of Tchushkarcheto organises carpet-weaving and wool dyeing workshops using all natural materials. Tchushkarcheto carpets have been ordered by numerous clients all over the world, as far as Australia, the USA and Europe.
