Pierre Vanherck

Cane maker

Symbols of timeless elegance

  • Pierre uses only carefully selected wood registered with CITES
  • He invented the formula to cast metal directly into the wood
  • In 2015, he created his first olfactory cane

After having made a career as a computer scientist, Pierre Vanherck decided to turn his life around at the age of 38 and follow his true passion. “I started out making contemporary furniture” he remembers, “then one day I bought some machines together with a stock of precious wood from the late 19th century. I was told that this wood was destined to make prestige walking sticks: everything started from there.” Entirely self-taught, he developed a unique know-how that allows him to combine materials having different expansion coefficients. The result is the creation of exclusive accessories composed of the finest woods: silver, gold and even precious stones. Over the years, Pierre’s canes have acquired an international notoriety: unique, unusual and precious canes of the 21st century that give a new and modern meaning to the word elegance.

Why did you decide to create walking sticks?
Because they are very beautiful objects. I believe that the walking stick is a unique and timeless accessory: carrying it is not only elegant but also a sign of prestige. I also create jewels and contemporary art objects, which are made with the same techniques I use for the canes.
What do you love most about your profession?
The magic that happens when the piece of wood is on the lathe and offers its colour when it reveals itself. In a few seconds, a piece of wood can take a whole new turn to become a work of art.
What is your favourite custom-made cane?
I have created more or less complicated canes depending on the personalities. But having the chance to create a cane for Pope Benedict XVI is – and will remain – an exceptional moment in my professional life.
Is your craft in danger?
People don't carry the cane like they did in the early 20th century, so the demand is not high. This is the reason I have diversified into making other art objects. I believe it is important to reinvent yourself to get more visibility, enabling you to advance in your creative work.
