Georgia Gremouti

Textile sculptor

Textile explorations

  • Georgia experiments through fabric and paper
  • She held a solo exhibition at the Benaki Museum
  • Her Greek heritage influences her

While working all day as a musician, Georgia Gremouti remembers staying up all night so she could draw and sculpt. “I realised then how important visual artwork was to me.” An artist in every sense, the Greek textile worker creates surprising fabric pieces where she combines many techniques such as pleating and origami. She experiments mainly with textiles and paper, exploring their visual potential. Strongly inspired by biology, Georgia's works derive from micro-landscapes – organic shapes that find an unexpected harmony. Before experimenting with textiles, she studied sculpture at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, which has had a real influence on her approach to materials and her way of exploring dimensions.

Why did you choose this craft?
It was a matter of need. Creating and expressing myself gives me a sense of completeness. Like being in a state where things are harmoniously coming together, and most importantly matching the inside with the outside.
How is your work linked to Greece?
The traditions of early 20th century Greece inspired my grandmothers to start dressmaking, they passed on their expertise and love of fabric to me. Living in Greece is like living in a big museum, the past is involved in the present. As a raw material, I often use silk from Soufli – it is such high quality.
What specific techniques you are familiar with?
The process of converting a flat surface into a 3D one, using a variety of techniques. In my years of study, I started with shibori techniques, then origami techniques – paperfolding, fabric pleating, etc. – and then I have worked with pleating techniques through 3D drawing programmes.
How would you describe what you do?
By shaping I hide and I reveal. I like to think that I am helping to give voice to what has not yet been expressed. Diving into the inner world – researching and studying – and then emerging through expression and creation.
