Catching the imagination

  • Eili follows in the footsteps of tradition
  • She is one of a few young glass blowers in Estonia
  • She teaches students at the Olustvere Glass Studio

Eili Soon is one of the few glass blowing masters in Estonia that has over 10 years of experience in the field of glass. She is fascinated by traditional glass techniques and tries to blend them with new techniques through diverse forms and colour variations. The delicate, yet mysterious material of glass has interested her since the age of 16 when she first discovered the material. From that moment she delved into the rich history of glass at the Academy of Arts in Tallinn and then worked in various glass studios across Estonia. Her work is inspired by traditional local glassware, human nature, the environment, and history. She enjoys blowing flycatchers and keeping alive the craft by educating students and apprentices at the Olustvere Glass Studio.

How would you define what you do?
I mould a piece without touching it with my hands, but through focus, attention, and blowing. It’s a thrilling experience. Mastering this craft is highly rewarding when you receive the desired result.
What makes this craft special to you?
It requires a lot of planning, attention, concentration, but at the same time, it’s a workout for my body and mind. My favourite part is always the next day discovering what waits for me in the annealer when taking out cooled glass pieces.
When was a memorable moment in your career?
Working with glass is always teamwork, and recently I experienced a great creative collaboration with my assistant. It has been so intuitive and easy, which I am so pleased about.
What techniques do you master?
I master many techniques; graal is among one of my favourites. I use cane work, sand casting, hot sculpting, mould blowing, freehand blowing, shape blowing, grinding, sandblasting, engraving, coldworking, and gluing.
