Makhila manufactory tour in the Basque Country

with Makhila Ainciart Bergara

Tour a Living Heritage Company

The Ainciart Bergara workshop has been making the Basque walking stick makhila for over 200 years. The manufactory has also been included in the UNESCO Inventory of Rare Crafts. Today, it opens its doors to all visitors for a tour of the workshop. They can learn about the history of the makhila, see the family behind the manufactory and enjoy a short film, which showcases the family’s artisan know-how. The tour ends in the main room, where visitors can see different artisans at work: from crafting makhilas of honour and forging metal, to engraving handles and braiding leather.
