A path as clear as glass

  • Bakhtiyar makes symbolic stained glass works
  • He specialises in Tiffany style, fusing and painting
  • He is also a professor of art at the Academy of Arts

Stained glass maker and university arts teacher Bakhtiyar Yusifov was forever invested in stained glass. He trained in stained glass at university and later became a professor of painting, pursuing his glass work on the side. He prioritises diligence in his work, believing that only love and effort can produce something truly colourful. His dedication is palpable in every one of his glass works, be it a Tiffany style chandelier or a fused candle holder. Bakhtiyar finds inspiration in his country, Azerbaijan, its history and traditions. “It is necessary to reflect nationality, how else can you be different?” he ponders. Bakhtiyar is committed to passing on his craft to the younger generations in the years to come.

How did your education affect your creative journey?
It is a rather interesting story. I learned stained glass and fusing when I studied at the State Academy of Arts. Then I became an art professor at the Academy of Arts. In 2012, I made a window for a class of children I was teaching, and that was a trigger for me. In 2020, I opened my workshop.
What is your process in crafting a stained glass piece?
First of all, I visualise the design in my mind. Then I draw it. After choosing the right colour combinations for the glass, I cut pieces of glass according to the drawing. I assemble them with copper tape and fasten the gaps with tin. I add the finishing touches. And if I need metal, I will prepare a drawing and order it from a master.
What are your sources of inspiration?
The place where I live influences my art as well as the regions I see while touring our country. I feel it necessary to reflect on my culture, and on how I can convey traditional, national concepts in a modern way.
What is your advice for the next generation of artisans?
It is essential to know and understand colour schemes and combinations, warm colours and cold colours. Aspiring stained glass artisans should study Tiffany style glass composition, stained glass, fusing and painting.
