Viktória Maróti

Ceramicist

Challenging stereotypes about materials

  • Viktória made her first ceramic piece when she was 10 years old
  • Her work sits on the border between textile and ceramic art
  • Her style is reminiscent of basket weaving, except she works with ceramics

"I remember my first encounter with clay. I was about five years old, and I still remember the feelings of working with the material with crystal clarity," says Viktória Marióti. This passion for ceramics has remained with her and Viktória, now a ceramics graduate, launched her own studio in 2018. She has been experimenting in-depth with one particular technique which consists in her constructing a pattern on a sheet of clay, then stabbing vertical sticks into it, and building a structure around these sticks. During the firing, the wood and yarn she used is destroyed, and what remains is an airy, unique set of structures that captivate with their delicacy.

How do you combine tradition and innovation in your work?
My method is similar to basket weaving, but the challenges posed by ceramics are different. It is not for nothing that materials are assigned to certain techniques... The innovative aspect of my work lies in the unusual way in which I combine material and technology.
What is the most difficult part of your profession?
In addition to porcelain, my work also involves wood and yarn, which are fired and then emitted from the kiln as smoke. I do not have my own kiln, so it is usually difficult to find a place where I can obtain the right conditions for this type of firing.
What inspires you?
The experiences in my everyday life are automatically incorporated into my visual language. I always have a basic idea that multiplies during work. It is as if my hands are part of a thought process. My works follow each other, they are connected.
In what direction do you want to develop?
I would like to open up to other media. I have some exposure to textiles, and I would love to acquire a more in-depth knowledge of them, which would help me in the finishing touches of my artworks.
