Argentine-born sculptor Sofia Donovan, now in Chile, has immersed herself in ceramics since 2009, learning under mentor Ruth Krauskopf and engaging in courses worldwide. Captivated by volume, colours, and textures, ceramics proved to be the ideal medium for Sofia’s pursuits. Firing her pieces adds a layer of surprise, creating what Sofia describes as a magical moment. At Taller La Roca, she blends traditional clay techniques with a contemporary, psychedelic, and metaphoric language in her creations. Her work is defined as contemporary ceramic sculpture, marked by experimentation and the crafting of non-stereotypical pieces. Sofia is a proud member of The International Academy of Ceramics.

How do you compare the versatility of clay to previous materials you used?
Clay is versatile and responsive to my needs, unlike previous materials. Its adaptability has placed it at the forefront of my work and allowed me to make intriguing, incredibly expressive original sculptures.
What makes you a non-stereotypical ceramicist?
I favour vibrant glazes, akin to painting, creating contrast with my sculpted ceramic forms. They add delicacy to the robust. I shun an earthy look. My goal is expression, not assimilation. Aligned with contemporary art, I see myself as a guerrilla infiltrator rather than a traditional ceramicist.
How does firing clay impact your artistic process?
Firing is vital, introducing surprise and dynamic elements to my work. The challenging technique appeals to my restless mind, triggering unforeseen outcomes. It also contributes to the conceptual development of ceramic parts in my artworks.
Is there a significant moment in your professional life?
A memorable moment was participating in Biennale Révélations in Paris, sponsored by the Chilean Ministry of Culture. Additionally, I was recognised by the Argentine ambassador in Chile for my contribution to cultural exchange between Chile and Argentina.
