Simona Janišová is driven by a thirst to explore, create and to work. She is drawn to the feeling that working with ceramic materials gives her. They are part of her life, allowing her to express herself and to communicate a wide range of ideas and inspirations. “I‘m fascinated by the power of clay to build an intimate relationship with the viewer,” she explains. Simona enjoys creating both functional and sculptural pieces. By creating objects for everyday life, she knows that they will be cherished by their owners. “Sometimes, it is me shaping the clay, other times the material is reshaping my personality and, through my artwork, I’m keeping an open dialogue with the outer world,” she reflects on her connexion with her principal material.

Why did you decide to be a ceramicist?
Choosing ceramics as my professional career was an outcome of circumstances which include my endless thirst for creative expression, together with sensual joy from touching clay and other ceramic materials. Ceramics contain everything that an artist can wish for.
Do you have any unique approaches to ceramics?
I use a wide range of ceramic techniques such as porcelain slip casting, hand building from stoneware and wheel throwing. I use digital technologies like CNC milling for the production of plaster moulds. Moulds for my Anachronik Collection and Insideout series were made this way.
Where do you source your clay?
Currently, I'm working with an exquisite clay from a small village in the middle of Slovakia. It has a red colour and can be fired at high temperatures, which means it is very durable. Usually, I work with stoneware from Czech and Germany, and french porcelain.
How do sculptural and functional objects differ?
I think about this distinction as fluid. It is something which I am still curious about. The line between art and function intrigues me in my work and my everyday life. It is an ongoing search.
