Honouring the imagination behind the sculpture

Seymur creates unique wood carvings that carry cultural symbolism
His journey as a wood carver began in his father’s furniture workshop
He believes patience is key to producing impactful works

Seymur Ahadov’s connection to his craft has been with him all his life. Born in Sheki in 1967, he discovered his passion for wood carving as a child, while watching his father at work. Without any formal training, Seymur developed his own artistic language, crafting chess sets, walking canes, and decorative panels inspired by Azerbaijani culture. His techniques include chiselling, carving and hand painting, along with patience and precision. "Modern-day machines such as 3D CNC machines cannot replicate the intricate hand-carved details that require high precision," says Seymur. "Achieving great results in wood carving requires patience." As an artist, he is intent on sharing the inspiration for his sculptures with viewers, noting that when the symbolism or intention of a piece is known, its beauty is all the more arresting.

What was the turning point for you?: I first carved wood as a child in my father’s workshop, but in 2015, I turned my passion into my profession. My first project, a wooden candlestick, made me realise that I could create something truly meaningful.
What defines something as well made in your view?: An object must be crafted with patience and precision, without shortcuts. I once spent 40 days on a single piece to make sure it was perfect. A well made object carries not just skill but also the artist’s soul within it.
How do you balance tradition with innovation?: I respect traditional techniques but also adapt to modern needs. I have created pieces like wooden phone stands while preserving the essence of Azerbaijani motifs. The past and present should coexist in craftsmanship.
What question do you wish people asked you about your work?: I wish more people would ask about the deeper meaning behind my work. Each carving has a story – its form, its details and its inspiration. I want my art to be understood, not just admired.
