The grandson of an antique dealer, Sean Evelegh is an award-winning woodworker who has been surrounded by heirlooms and historic furniture from an early age. An appreciation of the durability and longevity of antique furniture became the foundation for his life and craft. He has always been driven to create, and found the 3D medium of woodworking the most satisfying. From a hand carved chess set to his first commission of a chopping board, varied work early on laid the foundations for the bespoke pieces that Sean creates today. He takes inspiration from Roman architecture, Scandinavian design, contemporary design, and the craftsmanship of antique furniture. Now based in his studio in Kent, Sean seeks to craft pieces that will stand the test of time and be enjoyed generations from now.

Interview

Which parts of the creative process do you enjoy most?: I love the rawness of hand-sketching during which I am manipulating lines until the design comes to life. I also enjoy selecting timber, especially looking for the most characterful grain, and the right structural integrity. Every part is looked after so that the piece lasts generations.
What set you on the path to working with wood?: When I was around 15, I made a chess side table. My teacher said the piece was of a much higher standard than typical for my age. It gave me the reassurance I needed to know that this what I wanted to do for a career.
How does the material continue to inspire you?: I love the variety to be found in wood. Some species have the most striking colours, or mesmerising grains, such as wych elm. There is a lot to consider when working with this type of wood. A major factor for me in deciding to pursue this craft was the use of wood as a material.
Can you share a memorable moment in your professional life?: I was commissioned to make a statement desk which took several months to make. The first time my client saw it, he was left speechless and bewildered! I felt proud to see the impact my work can have. That feeling will stay with me forever.
