Jewellery with a message

  • Sarah is a Swiss goldsmith and jewellery designer
  • She wants to send a positive message through her art
  • Her metals are ethically sourced

Sarah Küffer was only a child when she started making pieces of jewellery from brass wire. With a grandfather who was a craftsman and an early interest for his work, she decided to study at the School of Design in Bern where she learnt all the traditional goldsmithing techniques. After years of working in the field, it was during the 2020 Covid lockdown that something clicked, and Sarah decided to start her own business. Jewellery is more than decoration to her. Each of her collections resonates with themes and values that are important to her, as well as reflecting her work ethic. Working with silver and gold, all metals used by Sarah are ethically sourced and certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council in London.

What brought you to goldsmithing?
My grandfather was a watchmaker and goldsmith, I was fascinated by precision mechanics from an early age and was already bending pieces of jewellery from brass wire with fine pliers as a child. It was clear very early on that my training should go in a design direction.
When did you set up your own studio?
During the first Covid lockdown in 2020, I decided to start my own business. Following the motto "now or never", I set up my goldsmith's studio and designed my first jewellery collection ERI. Everything went very quickly from there, online and in shops.
What was your first collection all about?
My first collection, ERI, is inspired by the paper clip that was worn on clothes in Norway during World War II as an emblem of resistance and cohesion. ERI is unisex, and wants to send a signal against racism and for more solidarity and cohesion.
What do you like about your craft?
It is very pleasing when, after the intensive design phase, I can translate my designs into precious metal. I want to create jewellery that stimulates thought and provokes dialogue, and only then does it become visible how the piece looks when worn on the body.
