Orsola Mainardis

Beadworker

The many applications of beads

  • Orsola's atelier-shop has the authentic charm of Venice
  • She works on her own executing every step
  • She uses beads to create jewellery and embellish objects

Orsola Mainardis is a Venetian at heart, proud of her identity and heritage. Since the early 2000s, she has been creating and making her jewellery using beads of glass, one of Venice’s trademarks. She was not born into crafts, but instead taught herself her craft, using thread, needle, and wire to devise her pieces. Orsola's technique is bead-weaving, paired with experimentation. She explains that although she may set out with a clear vision in mind, during the making process there is often an unexpected transformation or change of course, and the outcome can be quite different from her original idea. Orsola’s workshop is open, and she thoroughly enjoys the contact with the public, and the opportunity to showcase the different steps of her work.

What is the impact of Venice on your work?
Venice is an open-air museum and every corner is a source of inspiration. There is the water element, its colours and hues. I live by the sea, and I usually take long walks on the beach with my two dogs, and this contact with water inspires me, too.
What does the contact with the public mean to you?
It is extremely rewarding to be able to show people how my work is done, through eye-contact and conversations. These special connections with the client allow them to know exactly what they are purchasing, and appreciate the craftsmanship and uniqueness of each piece.
How would you describe your creations?
All my creations are one-of-a-kind, and this is where I let my creativity run free. The construction can lead to unexpected results. I have ventured into e-commerce, offering made to order pieces, that I deliver in a few days, satisfying clients’ wishes through my personal interpretation.
What is it like working on your own?
It requires patience and focus, but it is also liberating. I can express myself through my creations, I am my own boss, I praise and scold myself, it is an exhilarating feeling. And I can spend time with my clients, connecting with them and sharing with them what I do.
