Ninahana Art Flower
Artificial flower maker

Lifelike even for the bees

  • Nina makes lifelike creations of flowers using fine pre-stiffened fabrics
  • Her floral pieces capture the natural form, texture and movement of real flowers
  • She finds endless inspiration in the flowers she grows in her garden herself

Nina Bethlehem discovered the craft of artificial flower making in 2016 during a workshop in her native Hong Kong. “When I first gave it a try, I felt a voice in my heart saying, this is it. I was instantly drawn to every aspect of the craft – the meditative process, the richness of tradition and the endless possibilities for artistic expression,” recalls Nina. Now based in the Dutch rural province of Drenthe, she uses the finest Chinese and Japanese pre-stiffened fabrics, such as silk, cotton and velvet to capture the delicate movement, texture and quiet beauty of real flowers. Nina aims to preserve this rare art form and connect others with the joy of flower making through her workshops in Amsterdam, Drenthe and online. “The greatest compliment I received was a magical moment when a bee landed on one of my flowers,” she says.

How has living in the Netherlands affected your craft?
In Hong Kong, flowers were less accessible, and life moved at a much faster pace. In Drenthe, I found the space to slow down and connect with nature. Because flowers are so present in Dutch daily life, I feel fully immersed and constantly inspired by my environment.
Has gardening influenced your creativity?
I discovered I could grow my own flowers, and that completely transformed my perspective. Being able to study the forms and textures of flowers up-close has deepened my connection to them. This direct relationship with nature is one of my greatest sources of inspiration.
What is the most memorable piece you created?
My favourite piece is called The Golden Hour, a bouquet I originally created for my wedding. Later, I rearranged the flowers into a table centrepiece that is always displayed in our home.
When is a piece truly complete in your eyes?
A finished piece is one in which craftsmanship, attention to detail and precision come together. When something is made with care and intention, people can feel it. I always aim to capture the natural form and movement of each flower with a detailed and focused approach.
