Nigel O’Reilly’s work is defined by the blending of ancient and modern techniques in his own inimitable style, complete with vibrant and voracious quantities of coloured gemstones. How would you describe your skills as a jeweller?
Choosing unusual gemstones and developing each piece of wearable art around that single central gemstone. Be that an heirloom precious stone, or individually sourced gemstones for commissioning clients, I love the magic in each gem, and treat it as a singular entity.
What are your sources of inspiration?
The first source is a central gemstone in each work. I design outwards from that stone, from choosing the colour combination of smaller gemstones to the undulating shapes of pure gold to either complement or contrast with the gemstone shape and form.
What is little known about working with gemstones?
I always set diamonds under my central gemstones, so that they shine through the top facets of the stone. Typically, these diamonds are only ever seen by the wearer, they touch the client’s hand, but they produce a little bit of magic when the client discovers the hidden artistry.
What would be your advice to an aspiring jeweller?
To practise and hone your skills over and over. Become an expert in your chosen craft. Do not be afraid to fail, because you will fail many times, this is inevitable doing this type of work. Use these failures to get up and start again and create new ideas.
