Weaver

Looking for resonance

  • Nathalie studied graphic and textile design
  • Her creations focus on pure and intangible elements
  • She is optimistic about the future of crafts

When Nathalie Van der Massen finished her master's in Graphic Design, she got the chance to work at the TextielMuseum in Tilburg. There she was so inspired by all the techniques and materials that she decided to do another master's in Textile Design. After graduating she was invited to do research inspired by the archives of the Flanders Architecture Institute, which functioned as a catalyst to focus on textiles in the context of architecture and interiors. She also did internships in the fashion industry with Christian Wijnants and Hilde Frunt. At first she was combining graphic jobs with her own creative practice until 2018 when she decided to start her own design studio at Haptic House, a creative coworking space in Antwerp.

Do you have any specialisations?
I’m drawn to natural materials, especially linen. It’s fascinating to see how the raw material keeps its stubborn streak even after it’s been processed to yarn. Looking for resonance, I strive to make timeless jacquard weavings, combining functionality and beauty.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I love the installations of James Turell, the architecture of Tadao Ando and music by artists such as Sunn 0))) and Philip Glass. It’s all about pure, intangible elements like light, time, skills and materials. Ideas often come in dreamlike moments.
How do you combine tradition and innovation?
I combine industrial production methods with handiwork. The design often begins with a painting or drawing and ends with a finish or extra processing. I love experimenting with multiple layered structures, density and finishing. Luckily we have the heritage of these skills here.
Could your craft be considered in danger?
Although the Belgian textile industry has suffered due to globalization and economic opportunism, there’s a strong counter-movement going on. More people want to know how things are made and who makes them. This awareness motivates me.
Nathalie Van der Massen is a rising star: she began her career in 2017
