Mosaics Martí is inherently bound to Spanish history and Barcelona's architecture and urban landscape. Bernat Martí Arlandís founded his first atelier in Manresa, Barcelona in 1913, after relocating from Valencia. There he had been a mosaicist for the prestigious Casa Escofet. Hydraulic mosaic in modernist buildings, homes and passageways blossomed in the following decade, and Bernat’s tiles left their imprint. But during the Spanish Civil War the atelier was taken by both Republican and Francoist armies.
In the early 1980s Bernat’s grandchildren, Pere and Albert, recovered the atelier and restored the moulds and presses under the name Mosaics Martí. Today, the atelier's catalogue includes designer collaborations from figures like Lluís Clotet and Rem Koolhaas, among others. Albert’s interest in architecture and the preservation of his craft led him to La Salle School of Architecture where he currently teaches two masters courses and sponsors an annual design contest with alumni.
