Wood poetry

  • Michael works with a wide variety of woods
  • For him, carving resonates with joy
  • He established his gallery on Santorini island

Based on the characteristic island of Santorini, Greek wood carver Michael Arvanitis produces series of sculpted objects, whether decorative or functional, realistic or abstract. Michael’s relationship with wood began in childhood when he was assisting his father, a wooden furniture maker. Inspired by ancient Greek pottery, Santorini’s architecture or simply the different qualities of wood, each object created by Michael tells a unique story. In 2020 he opened his gallery where his poetic collection of sculptures is showcased in a sober and elegant environment.

Why did you choose woodworking?
I am fascinated by wood as a natural living organism. Wood challenges me as a creative material. Its complex structure, the variety of colours, the imperfections, the many possibilities of approaching it enhance the aesthetic quality of the works made of it.
Did you learn the craft from a master woodcarver?
I studied under the guidance of Bekos Panagiotis and George Thanos who both specialise in carved furniture. The contribution of Bekos, an excellent church woodcarver, has been significant to my journey. Beyond their influence, I experimented mostly on my own.
How do you relate to tradition in your work?
I feel the need to express tradition, which is inspired by the architecture of Santorini and by the images and feelings this special place provides. But I also try to maintain a close relationship between tradition and innovation without seeking the sterile preservation of the past.
What do you love most about woodcarving?
The art of wood carving offers the ultimate sense of expression, creation, sharing and communication. Both for those practising the art and those who can recognise the art. Both appreciate expertise, euphoria and the beauty of existence.
