Mehrnoosh Ganji

Jewellery maker

Persian splendour in precious wonders

  • Mehrnoosh masters metal forming, folding, soldering and plique-à-jour enamelling
  • Her work is inspired by the rich ornamental traditions of Persian dynasties
  • Her jewellery pieces are incredibly intricate, often with hidden elements

Mehrnoosh Ganji has a lifelong passion for making exquisite objects. She studied engineering in Iran which taught her to perform the mathematical calculations necessary for her precision jewellery making today. Soon after moving to Australia, Mehrnoosh studied jewellery making and became part of the contemporary jewellery scene in Melbourne. She is particularly inspired by the magnificent architecture of Iran, such as the Safavid dynasty Isfahan and the Qajar dynasty Golestan Palace. Their dazzling use of coloured glass is miniaturised into jewellery form in her pieces through the technique of plique-à-jour enamel. Mehrnoosh's work demands great precision, which she achieves with an electronic digital calliper. "The intense creative life of Vincent van Gogh is a source of inspiration for me, too," she says. She has won many prizes, including the Saul Bell Design Awards.

How would you define what you do?
I craft jewellery pieces that narrate stories and encourage wearers to embark on their own journeys of discovery. Each piece evokes emotions of hope, connection, belonging, and empowerment.
Why did you choose this craft?
My passion for art and the tactile joy of creating with my hands has been a lifelong pursuit. Prior to jewellery making, I explored painting, miniature painting and calligraphy. Jewellery making felt like the culmination of these passions, a true calling where I could express myself fully through design and craftsmanship.
In what way is your craft linked to the territory?
My designs are deeply rooted in the rich architectural and artistic heritage of my Persian culture. Additionally, my work strives to foster conversations, empowerment and a sense of belonging, transcending geographical boundaries.
How do you express tradition and innovation in your work?
I blend traditional metalworking techniques and enamelling with innovative design approaches. While I incorporate traditional patterns, I infuse them with my unique interpretation, resulting in fresh, contemporary pieces that merge tradition with modernity. Additionally, I prioritise functionality and usability in my designs.
