Maximilian Mucska

Tailor

From father to son

  • Maximilian takes dozens of hours to tailor a suit
  • The first suit he made was in a 70s disco style
  • His source of inspiration is the exchanges with his sons

One could hardly find a better example of a craftsman transferring his craft to another generation – Maximilian Mucska and his two sons Patrik and Erik are the ideal examples. Maximilian began mastering his craft already in 1978 in a state-owned enterprise. At the same time he was developing his tailor skills in his own workshop and was therefore more than ready to open his own shop shortly after the Velvet revolution in 1989. He began a fruitful collaboration with the Theater an der Wien in Vienna and later started to transfer his craft to his two sons. Today, Maximilian Mucska Tailors is a well-established tailor shop in the heart of Bratislava with a strong dedication to bespoke tailoring – clothing made to the specification of every individual buyer.

What is a memorable moment in your career?
Firstly, the fall of the communist regime in Slovakia and the consecutive establishment of my first tailor’s workshop. And secondly, the transfer of my craft from myself to my children and an establishment of a workshop in Bratislava focused solely on bespoke tailoring.
Where do you take your inspiration from?
There is an inspiring clash between my vision of an ideal suit and the vision of my sons. I prefer the classical Viennese/Bratislava style of suit while my sons are inclined to the more casual style preferred in the north of Italy.
What is little-known about your work?
It can take up to 75 hours of focused and patient work with an eye for every detail to make a single suit. People often underestimate the time and dedication required to hand tailor fine suits.
What would be your advice to an aspiring tailor?
If you were not born into a family where you can undertake a craft, you have to find your own way. And this way can be hard because the path to true craftsmanship is slow and can only be learned from real masters. One has to be disciplined, precise and focused on the job.
Maximilian Mucska is a master artisan: he began his career in 1978 and he started teaching in 2000
