Basketweaver

Recovering the ancestral

  • Marta is an expert in basketry
  • Her work is based on an ancestral tradition
  • In 2020, she won the Lorenzo Berg Award for best artisan

Marta Patricia Godoy Castillo made her first basket with totora plant fibre when she was eight years old after observing her mother. Graciela Castillo was also a craftswoman and was Marta's first teacher. By the time she turned 18, Marta realised that crafts were her path forward. "I was a skillful, quick young woman who understood every step to the letter: how to make the cords, the twists, the braids. How to give each piece the thickness, the assembly and the finishing touches. But it was not until after I became an engineer, and worked in a mine, that I felt the need to devote myself completely to working with my hands, just like my mother had done," she says. "Each of my pieces carries with it that knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, which rescues and preserves the tradition and cultural heritage of my family and the territory I inhabit," explains Marta.

How would you describe the objects you make?
Each of my pieces is made, from start to finish, meticulously by my hands. I use cattail vegetable fibre in its natural colour, preserving its particular texture and smell, and I transform it into a light and durable object.
When do you know that a work is finished?
It is when people can appreciate a perfect work, with well-defined details and shapes that allow them to interpret or search for a meaning as to the message it contains.
How do you manage the ancestral and the contemporary in your works?
In some of my works, I apply ancestral reed spinning techniques and shape them freehand, obtaining pieces that reflect ancestral characteristics, but applied to represent the current reality we live in, seeking to generate a reflection in those who observe them.
Was there a memorable moment of your professional life?
The moment when I created the work La Ronda in honour of the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Mistral. I won the Seal of Excellence for it in my country, which is the highest distinction for an artisan.
Marta Patricia Godoy Castillo is a master artisan: she began her career in 1988 and she started teaching in 2003
