Maru Meleniou

Ceramicist

Conscious clay

  • Maru’s work questions the beauty of everyday life
  • Her experience in Japan had a major influence on her work
  • She designs exclusive tableware for Greek chefs

After a background in graphic design, Maru Meleniou became fascinated with ceramics; she was seduced by the rhythm and purpose of the process, in which she saw “a path to self-awareness”. Drawing on her meaningful experience in Japan, her approach is inspired by the art of living, the notion of the essential. Maru demonstrates a fine attention to detail, unveiling the beauty in imperfection. Organic shapes, earthy colours and subtle textures, her ceramic pieces embody her creative process and the honest relationship she has cultivated with clay. Her work includes mostly stoneware; tableware but also sculptural objects. For Maru, the idea of well made lies in the right balance between freedom of expression, intellectual content and artistic dexterity.

What led you to craft?
My first job was in an animation studio where everything was made by hand. In every other job I then had, I was never asked to work with my hands again; it was all digitised. After the charm of the new faded, my need for tactile expression resurfaced.
What inspired you about ceramics?
There are many reasons that made me devote myself to the practice of ceramics. The solitude, repetitive and transformative nature of the medium met my personality and needs at that time. An absorbing exploration had begun and goes on until today.
Do you master any specific techniques?
I do not know if I master any, but my favourite technique is coiling. The honesty of this creative process reflects in the small details, imperfections and qualities. A slow, almost meditative process that after years of practice creates a unique relationship between the artist and the medium.
What would be your advice to an emerging ceramicist?
Practice and observe. Practice a lot to create a truthful relationship with the medium. Step back and observe your piece, observe yourself through the creative process. Don’t try to rush, don’t try to copy a success story. Observe, and remember to engage with the process.

Athens: the birthplace of the amphora
1 location
Athens and craftsmanship have always gone hand in hand. In an environment where the city nurtures artistic experimentation, ancient Greek artisans created the first amphorae – storing jars made of ceramics, metal and stone. On our itinerary you will find ceramicists and silversmiths who imitate classical techniques, while modernising the shape and form of this ancient vessel.
