  • Martín's vibrant works are made of felt, wire, jewels and more
  • Fashion and folk art permeate his aesthetic
  • He is the author of an illustrated children's book

Martín Badia has enjoyed drawing since he was a child. For him, it was always an escape. At the age of 14, he was asked to illustrate a book that a teacher from his school was going to publish, and from that moment he knew he would devote himself to illustration. His illustrations explore new paths and attempt to break with tradition. "Artistic creation has permeated all aspects of my life for as long as I can remember, from applied arts, illustration, ceramics and sculpture to writing. I am always looking for new means to express emotions, stories or concepts," says Martín. "I do not think I could do anything else. Over the years, my interests have changed, but I have always used art to channel my emotions." His masks are colourful pieces that have attracted attention ever since he started making them, and today they are a key element in his creative range.

When did you start making masks?
Specifically, in the year 2020. I felt the need to do something with my hands, something that could be touched and experienced beyond a screen. The masks gave me a new language of expression where I combine the body with the imaginary.
How did the idea of creating such pieces come about?
The first object I made in this collection of masks was a pair of jewelled glasses. I wanted to play with the concepts of masculine and feminine. The experience was liberating, and I continued to explore the medium to create new avatars to embody.
How has living outside your country influenced you?
As an immigrant, my imagination is mobile. I bring many things from Argentine Mesopotamia where I grew up – the colours and sensations of nature, and I mix them with the visual flavours of the old European world where I now live.
What are you seeking with your illustrations?
Storytelling through images. Objects, illustrations or photographs are always at the service of a story I try to tell, a mood I want to capture, or translating a feeling into something tangible.
