Colourful leather

  • Marijana used to work as a graphic designer
  • She set up a line of handmade leather products
  • Her label is called Beemara

Former graphic designer Marijana Pavlović started making simple leather goods like notebooks and photo albums as a hobby 20 years ago, while she was living in Australia. But when she returned to her hometown a decade later, she decided to open her own professional studio, where she began to design and exhibit her leather designs. Today, her brand Beemara is one of the most famous brands of handmade leather products in her country. In addition to Beemara, she also created the Beemara line of products for children. “In the beginning, I improvised a lot while working, and I learned a lot from that,” says Marijana, who taught herself how to work with leather by reading and discovering information on the Internet.

Why did you choose to work with leather?
I love leather because it’s a material of extraordinary possibilities, beauty and durability. From leather, I can make various types of products that are functional, that have great aesthetic value, and most importantly, that can last a long time.
How did you start designing products for children?
Under the name Beemara Kids, I started designing handmade products for teenagers, such as purses, notebooks or key chains. Making objects for children is my greatest pleasure. I only have time to do two children's collections every year, and this type of work relaxes me the most.
What are your sources of inspiration?
My inspiration for making my creations are classic and modern fashion trends. I often choose only a detail from current trends and incorporate it into my designs which are of a more simple and classic form.
What do you like most about your work?
My freedom and independence. I love that I can explore and develop my creativity, which has always been a part of my life. It's not a 9 to 5 career, inspiration doesn't ask you what time it is. I have the chance to balance my business life with family obligations.
