Discovering the medium of clay during her high school years, Marija Seman decided to immerse herself in it completely. For her, it’s the most challenging medium. Creative and driven by the endless possibilities of the pliable material, she opened a gallery with a group of colleagues right after graduation and the space is very active to this day. At her studio, Marija remains focused on producing original pieces fired at 1250 degrees. She mixes techniques and finds new approaches to explore form and material while maintaining a high level of craftsmanship – something she first notices in every piece. As a creative, she is invested in continuous learning as she promotes the cultural and personal value of handicraft.

How did you end up working in clay?: Early on, I was attracted to clay because of its suppleness and expressive potential. And I was challenged by the demanding creative process that engages me on multiple levels. I love the fragility of fresh clay and its transformation after firing.
When did you establish your own studio?: In 2010 and it was hard. I had to clean out an old cellar and make it into my own workspace. Perhaps it’s not a dream studio, but it’s very functional and I’m happy to have it. I’ve been working here for 12 years.
What does your creative process look like?: I use the traditional techniques of wheel throwing and shaping, mixed with cutting and changes to achieve a certain form. Then, I make moulds that help me produce multiple objects. I like simplicity, but that doesn’t imply a simple process.
What do you find the most inspiring in your work?: I’m truly fascinated by the endless possibilities that can be achieved with one material. There are dozens of kinds of clay and hundreds of glazes we can combine differently and fire at different temperatures for a myriad of different outcomes.
