Furniture maker

Furniture inspired by Ceará’s seafaring heritage

  • Léo combines native materials with precision techniques
  • His inspiration is drawn from culture, philosophy and art
  • His work was featured at Milan's Salone del Mobile

With a foundation in architecture, Léo Ferreiro’s work draws on local materials and the boatbuilding techniques of Fortaleza. He creates contemporary furniture that embodies the essence of his coastal environment. “Incorporating traditional cultural elements into modern design allows me to create something truly authentic and human,” Léo explains. His Caré collection, inspired by the jangada—a traditional fishing boat of Ceará—translates its structure into chairs, armchairs, and benches. Through precise joinery and tension ropes, the collection reflects the resilience and functionality of these iconic vessels. A celebration of regional craftsmanship, Léo's work has garnered prestigious recognition, including the Museu da Casa Brasileira, the Brasil Design Awards in 2022 and the IF Design Award 2023. It was also showcased at the Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2023, further highlighting its blend of cultural heritage and modern aesthetics.

Can you share an experience that shaped your designs?
My family encouraged hands-on work and creativity. Growing up in northeastern Brazil, where crafts and popular culture are prevalent, naturally influenced my design approach.
What keeps you inspired and generating new ideas?
I draw inspiration from the environment, dynamics, and forms around me. I also engage with fields like philosophy, literature, history, fashion, and the visual arts. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to draw concepts from these fields to inform my design practice.
What do you find most rewarding in your work?
Turning ideas into tangible forms is fulfilling. I also appreciate contributing to the artistic identity of my region and experiencing the therapeutic aspects of working with my hands.
What materials and techniques do you explore?
I frequently work with Brazilian wood, like Angeli wood from decommissioned jangadas, brass, steel, and polyester ropes, utilising carpentry and metalwork techniques. I also collaborate with artisans to incorporate materials such as leather and stone.
