John Farrell is an Irish designer and furniture maker, dedicated to creating unique and functional pieces that engage in dialogue with their surroundings. He founded his workshop, Esker Design, in 2020 in County Offaly, Ireland, driven by a commitment to technical craftsmanship, material exploration and considered design. His approach is deeply rooted in a respect for wood as a living material and he predominantly uses ash and oak, which he feels convey powerful emotive qualities. To source his wood, he partners with local timber yards and farmers, and is invested in Irish initiatives such as the Lisnavagh Timber Project. "Winning the DDCI Future Makers Award in 2021 helped launch my career," explains John. Soon after, he was featured in the Sunday Times which gained him his first commissions.

What is your training?
I was introduced to woodworking in secondary school, enjoyed the process and working with my hands. Then, I did an apprenticeship in wood machining and carpentry. Later I studied furniture design and manufacture at GMIT Letterfrack College.
What inspires your pieces?
I am inspired by lines and natural curves found in nature, and by how weather ages and adds texture to wood surfaces. Often the material itself informs the design direction. With my sculptural work, I love pushing the boundaries of the forms, balancing aesthetic with function.
Do you enjoy working to commissions?
Yes, a client's brief can help focus a design idea. There is a challenge to meet the client's vision and satisfy my own, but the collaboration can lead to work that pushes me out of my comfort zone and provides the client with a unique piece.
Is there a memorable moment in your career up to now?
A recent ambitious commission really challenged me. I was close to giving up but after lots of trial and error, the design emerged, and led to an award-winning piece! The experience strengthened my craftsmanship and was a valuable lesson in perseverance.
