Anne Nowak is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was born on the island of Bornholm, whose prehistoric nature and unlit skies infused her artistic vision and work. Anne studied textile printing and ceramics in Denmark, took art lessons in New York, as well as studied with Ulrik Hoff and Tuula Emborg. She works with a variety of mediums to communicate about the infinity of the cosmos, continuously expanding her palette of crafts and techniques. Whether exploring functionality in lamps or experimenting with mirrors and reflection, Anne's work is about bridging polarities and playing with our perception of space. "My work is never either-or but always both, and that makes it a transcending and transforming experience," she says.

What is your connection to Denmark through your work?

Growing up on the small island of Bornholm, I was immersed in nature, swimming from the rocks and exploring the forests. I now live and work in Copenhagen, which fuels my creativity. However, I still crave the tranquility of nature, which is why I also have a studio in Dyrehaven, a forest outside the city.

How much do you plan your work, and how much do you let yourself be led?

I embrace a balance of planning and spontaneity in my work. While I dedicate many hours to planning and working, I do not rigidly dictate where the process should lead. This openness allows me to be continually surprised, resulting in pieces that evolve organically and capture the essence of exploration and discovery.

Are there artistic areas into which you would never go?

There is potential in many directions, but I also know my limits. I once tried my hand at stonemasonry, but the task was too challenging. While I am open to exploring diverse materials and artistic areas, I ensure that my work remains true to my abilities and respects the integrity of each craft.

If you could use only one word to tie all your work together, what would it be?

Transformation. My work explores life's transition, the polarities of existence, and the endless cycle of all beings. I aim to create alternative universes that invite viewers to reflect on the infinite nature of our being and bridge the human experience with our oneness with all life across time and space.
