The vision to craft a thought

  • Tomáš' inner feelings are his source of inspiration to design new structures
  • He believes taking time to appreciate his own work is an important part of evolving his practice
  • He applies his craft to small and large works

With skill and determination, Tomáš Uhler shapes metal into meaningful objects of function and beauty, breathing life into a material that is often seen as rigid and unyielding. "Working with metal is no easy feat, as it is complex, physically demanding, and far from clean or safe," he says. Yet for Tomáš, each project offers a new challenge, fueling his relentless pursuit of learning and creativity. Tomáš pours his positive energy into every piece he creates, trusting that this effort resonates in the happiness and satisfaction of his customers. From hand-held objets d'art to large-scale structures in buildings, he applies his craft to a variety of metals such as steel and bronze, as well as silver and gold.

How do you balance aesthetics and functionality?
My internal motto, displayed in my workshop, is "Beauty lies in simplicity, perfection lies in detail." I adapt the entire process of creating a piece to this principle. Even when creating drawings, I ensure that the object can be produced, while focusing on the details that complete and harmonise the overall look.
Can details shift the direction of your work?
Each piece I create bears a unique imprint of its creation process. When working by hand, no two products are ever identical. Every detail, every tiny irregularity or texture reflects the combination of materials, tools, and energy used. This uniqueness makes each product an original with its own story.
How do you handle limitations in materials?
I am fascinated by how metal, as a material, can 'tell' me when certain paths are not possible, pushing me to find new solutions and approaches. When working with different materials, I enjoy their variety and unique properties. Each material has its own distinct personality.
Do clients give you freedom to express your vision?
I am most pleased when clients give me the space to be creative. This freedom allows me to materialise my ideas and turn them into art, which is extremely satisfying. The more challenging the project, the more motivated I am, and when the client is happy with the result, I feel a great inner satisfaction.
