Sussi Krull

Wauw Design
Ceramicist

Making a tactile ceramic vista

  • Sussi is a ceramicist who involves her customers in her making process
  • Her designs are inspired by the Danish moraine landscape
  • She uses glazes to create volume and texture in her tableware pieces

Sussi Krull graduated from the renowned Royal Danish Academy in 2006, majoring in glass and ceramics. Sussi was born in the South Funen Archipelago, whose unique moraine landscape inspires all her ceramic pieces. She now lives and works in Copenhagen. Her workshop and boutique are integrated, meaning visitors of Wauw Design are immersed in a ceramic universe. Here, Sussi stores and mixes all the ingredients, as well as creating the pieces. Every step of the journey is on display, but the place is more than a unique window into the creative process: here, creation takes place in real-time. "The duration, care, and skill it takes to make my pieces are evident here," she explains. "The customer can engage in a conversation with me—a dialogue that is often equally about giving for me, as it is enlightening for customers."

What are the advantages of integrating your workshop and shop spaces?
It is a revelation for my customers to see every step of the process—from powder to finished piece. It gives people an understanding of the slowness of ceramic work and of the rigour needed. I have large blackboards with samples of every glaze I use. It is very involving and rewarding for customers to be able to witness this first-hand.
What is the concept behind your Sustain collection of vases?
Developing glazes produces many leftovers, which I collect in large quantities. I also have leftover porcelain that goes into this mix. My Sustain collection is about making vases from these leftovers. Each object is entirely unique and I cannot recreate the vases.
How do you develop your craft?
I am always involved in a process. When I develop a glaze, I do many tests that I keep in my journal. I also make sure to take time off and dedicate my mind to experimentation. For the first time, I am currently developing a series of one-off table lamps and trays.
Which collection is closest to your heart?
Playing with the material is what I am most passionate about. I play when I glaze, and I often use several glazes together. I love developing new glazes and creating new expressions and imagery in my work. The image-making process is what is closest to my heart.
