Hermann & Luca Freymadl

Die Steinkultivierer
Stone carver

A father-son team crafting with grace

  • Hermann and Luca create stone works using local natural stones
  • Their craft merges art and function
  • They thrive by working together with trust and shared skills

Hermann and Luca Freymadl form a dynamic father-son duo, merging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation in their stone designs. Hermann's passion for the craft ignited at a young age at a trade fair, whereas Luca's interest evolved gradually, inspired by ancient structures and the tactile allure of stone. Both honed their skills as journeyman craftsmen and master restorers through traditional training and further education through a scholarship abroad. By utilising locally sourced natural stones from nearby quarries, Luca and Hermann's creations result in sustainable works that blend artistry with functionality. "Mutual trust and our diverse viewpoints drive our collaborative process," says Hermann. "Some projects demand close cooperation, while others grant creative freedom to one or the other of us."

What are your specialisations?
We specialise in objects and sculptures. Thanks to our spacious premises and modern equipment, we can realise works of all sizes in our workshop and are open to special requests, unusual projects and experiments.
Is a stonemason different from a sculptor?
Stonemasons and sculptors are like two sides of the same coin – one gives the stone its task in the world, the other lets poetry resound in the stone. The stonemason creates things that serve the demands of form and function. On the other hand, modern sculpture often pursues a purely aesthetic purpose.
In what way is your craft linked to your surrounding area?
Our craft is closely linked to it as we mainly use materials from the region. Natural stone from local quarries not only brings a special and local aesthetic to our work, but also reflects the landscape and history of the area.
What place does sustainability have in your work?
We see our studio as a company that preserves nature, promotes culture and takes responsibility for society. In addition to timeless design, sophistication and the durability of our work play a major role.
