While she was studying foreign languages at the Azerbaijan University of Languages, Gulchin Babayeva found herself drawn to creative work, and in particular basketweaving. One day, she crafted a small decorative basket for her home, fascinated by how simple materials could be transformed into something unique and tangible. "Friends and family started noticing my work and this encouraged me to continue, and grow my business," she says. Her approach combines an acute sense of environmental awareness and a respect for traditional weaving techniques, while at the same time producing objects fit for today's needs. "I enjoy exploring different materials and experimenting with design possibilities," explains Gulchin.

What was the turning point for you?
As a child, I was always fascinated by creating things with my hands. Basket weaving was not something I initially planned as a career, it is simply something I love doing. One day, I made a small decorative basket for my home, experimenting with materials and weaving techniques. That simple act of creativity ignited a passion in me, and I realised I wanted to craft more.
What is the secret to your success in basket weaving?
Dedication and innovation. I am completely self-taught, so I had to push myself to learn and improve. I use traditional techniques like plaiting, twining, and coiling, but I also love experimenting with new designs, colours, and forms to make each piece unique. Every basket is handcrafted with patience and precision.
How do eco-friendly practices shape your craft?
Eco-consciousness is central to my craft. I use natural, biodegradable materials to create durable, long-lasting baskets, reducing reliance on plastic. My small-scale production ensures quality while minimising waste. To me, craftsmanship should be both beautiful and responsible, promoting mindful living over convenience.
What has been an unforgettable moment in your professional life?
One of the most touching moments was when a customer ordered a custom basket for her mother. Later, she sent me a heartfelt message saying her mother was moved to tears because it reminded her of the baskets her own mother used to make. That moment reaffirmed to me why I practise my craft. It is about creating something meaningful that connects people to memories.
