Faye Hall brings nearly two decades of expertise in textile design to her jewellery practice. After designing fabrics for high-end fashion houses and interiors, she transitioned into jewellery in 2011, blending her knowledge of textiles with silversmithing, to develop her unique style. Her process is intuitive, normally starting with a fabric collage she arranges on her walls, pairing unexpected materials like silk with linoleum or gold with formica. Each piece reflects her playful take on colour, texture and form, balancing contrasts in a harmonious way. Sourcing materials from antique shops, flea markets or London fabric stores, Faye values the hunt as a crucial part of her creative process. - What are the key challenges in combining textiles and metals?
- The biggest challenge is ensuring that both materials complement each other rather than compete. Textiles are flexible and soft, while metals are rigid and structured. The key is to create harmony by thoughtfully considering weight, texture, and balance between them.
- What inspires the colour combinations in your work?
- Colour itself is a huge inspiration for me. I enjoy experimenting with unusual colour combinations that create striking contrasts, like reds with greens or soft pastels with bold tones. Colour exploration keeps my designs fresh and exciting, as I love to challenge traditional pairings.
- How do you feel about the connection between jewellery and fashion?
- I see jewellery as an extension of fashion, though more personal. Fashion often speaks to the masses, while jewellery can be an intimate reflection of one’s style. I love creating pieces that can be worn alongside fashion, but also stand on their own as unique expressions of art.
- How do you approach creating wearable art?
- Creating wearable art involves considering both aesthetics and functionality. I approach my designs with the intention to create something that feels beautiful when worn, while still allowing the material exploration to shine. The wearer should feel the tactile nature of the piece, adding to its allure.
