Trendy bags made to last

  • Emmanuelle’s bags are inspired by her travels and movies
  • Her creations are constantly evolving as a result of her monitoring of trends
  • She designed custom-made clutches for the Queen of Belgium

Emmanuelle Adam founded her leather bag atelier LILU following the acquisition of a boutique-atelier in Brussels, where she was mentored by three skilled leatherworkers. "Each of the leatherworkers brought their own techniques and perspectives on design, which resulted in my varied approaches to the craft. It was incredibly enriching to learn from them," she explains. Emmanuelle produces high-quality, durable bags in small quantities, prioritising sustainability and meticulous attention to detail. She emphasises the importance of the finishing touches. "These elements are crucial not only for the bag's style but also for its long-term durability. Over time, the leather will soften and develop a unique patina. I try to craft a bag that will age beautifully," Emmanuelle says. She also finds great fulfilment in the personal connections she forms with her clients, whether through face-to-face interactions or social media, as she assists them in selecting their ideal bag.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I frequently draw inspiration from my travels – be it from street art, exhibitions or performances. As an avid movie enthusiast, I also get inspired a lot from films. I am generally very curious and attuned to trends, making a conscious effort to stay informed about changes.
How is your craft linked to your home country?
Belgium, particularly Brussels, has been a renowned centre for leather craftsmanship since the 1970s. I had the opportunity to build on this expertise, especially at the start of LILU's journey. I was fortunate to collaborate with several skilled artisans.
Do you regularly train apprentices?
Yes, my team and I collaborate with local schools and institutions. Every individual who has worked in the atelier has also been trained in it.
What is a memorable moment in your career?
I will never forget the moment the Queen of Belgium requested three custom-made clutches from me for several events she was attending.
