The joy of clay

  • Elaine has a playful contemporary style
  • She creates pieces for the modern home
  • Her studio has an open access philosophy

Elaine Fallon studied at the Design & Crafts Council Ireland’s Ceramics Skills course. After a number of years teaching ceramics, she set up Brookwood Pottery in Dublin. At the studio she designs and makes a range of ceramic products in porcelain stoneware. She uses a rich selection of underglazes applied with brush and sponge to create her distinctive designs. Fallon is generous, and wants to share the joy of working with clay with everyone. She offers a range of workshops for the public, as well as, making her studio home to a number of resident potters who use the space on a monthly basis to create their own work. The studio shop sells Brookwood products and work from other Irish makers.

When did you first pick up this craft?
My first contact with clay was at a pottery class in Galway in the West of Ireland. I had graduated from quite an academic course in Dublin and was longing to do something creative. Little did I know I would still be making 25 years later!
Why were you drawn to clay?
I love clay for it’s tactile quality and it’s immediacy; as a designer you can implement new ideas quickly. I can express myself in clay comfortably and have always felt that working with clay is very nourishing to me.
What is special about porcelain stoneware?
I enjoy making with porcelain stoneware for its bright white colour, it is a perfect backdrop for my patterns and motifs. The tactile quality of porcelain is hard to beat and its smoothness is very alluring for me as a maker.
What is different about handmade products?
I believe strongly that craft can enhance our daily lives. It makes simple daily rituals special, like sharing tea together in cups moulded by hand. I love to hear that people enjoy using my work on a daily basis.
