Derek walks the line between functionality and artwork
His work is anchored in simplicity and repetition
Architecture and construction inspire his designs

Derek Wilson established his studio in 2008 after graduating from Ulster University. He describes himself as a 21st century hybrid, part studio potter and part conceptual artist. His work centres around the potter’s wheel as a tool, however the finished product resulting from this traditional craft is contemporary abstract sculpture. This balance is echoed throughout Derek's work as he creates functionality within unconventional forms. By keeping the interiors of his works glazed, the potential of function exists, even if the forms speak more to artworks. His pieces are characterised by restraint, containment and subtle surface treatments. They are often fired up to five times to get the correct finish, bringing out the best of light and shadow.

How do you approach your work?: The potter’s wheel is my predominant tool, that is where my work starts. However, my work isn’t static, rather it evolves over time. Contemporary ceramics have many identities and I celebrate a number of these in my pieces.
Do you use any particular techniques?: I frequently use engobe to achieve the surface quality that I want. This is a mixture similar to a slip, painted on between firings, and often layered. I polish it and re-fire pieces up to 4 or 5 times until I am satisfied with the depth of surface.
What has influenced your work?: I have always had an interest in architecture and my built surroundings. I also have a love of mid-century British constructivism. These, with other things, feed into my aesthetic: clean lines, abstract forms, the conversation between utility and form.
What are your plans for the future?: Apart from working on collections for upcoming exhibitions I intend to develop and push my ideas and sculptural practice further. I am currently interested in exploring new ceramic surfaces, colour and scale.
