Angles in polymer

  • Vahan was born in Armenia and moved to Ukraine
  • An architect by education, he experiments with material and form
  • He has a recognisable style of sculpting polymer clay

A well-known artisan in Ukraine, Vahan Avakian is a tireless innovator who is constantly on the search for new milestones in his craft. Opening a workshop in 2014, he has firmly placed himself as one of the brightest stars of modern Ukrainian designer sculpture. He primarily uses polymer clay for creating objects, a material that is both flexible and solid. The versatility of polymer allows Vahan to create very detailed works. “I create things that give people emotion and comfort, adding more beauty to the world.” His trademark is his polygonal style. He scrupulously constructs each item by hand defying the rise of the mass market and prides himself on delivering the highest quality in his sculptures without being afraid to shake the status quo.

What was a moment that defined your career?
It was the moment when I saw my very first work: the edges, the texture. It was an incredible impetus to carry on making. It was a concrete model measuring 30x10cm and I had been thinking about starting sculpting for about three years before actually finishing it.
What drives your passion for the craft?
Everything I see around me, whatever I come in contact with: life shapes me, provides my vision and creates my emotions. Then all of it flows into my work. The main reason I sculpt is quite simple: because that's what captured my heart.
What is your approach to choosing the right material?
I have tried different materials throughout my career. I am always on the lookout for new materials and I am constantly experimenting and looking for new shapes. I try to rethink traditional things and use the materials with the neoteric forms.
Can you give advice to those who are just starting their artisan path?
Mastering the craft will take a lot of effort, patience and time. I advise you to love with all your heart what you do, because otherwise, why do all this in the first place? Only love and effort will get you to the best results.
