Anestis Michalis

Ceramicist

Dancing with adding and removing

  • The first object Anestis created was a vase inspired by Cycladic figurines
  • In his works he conveys experiences, images and emotions creatively
  • He opened his workshop in Athens in 2021

During his studies in applied arts with a BA in Interior Architecture, Anestis Michalis also attended and participated in sculpture, free drawing and art history classes. A self-taught ceramicist, he was intrigued to pursue ceramics while attending sculpture classes. Along his professional path, Anestis did a residency in a workshop in Athens, where he received basic knowledge about the behaviour of clay as a material. He continued to research and experiment with ceramics on his own. He uses only slab, coil, and pinch construction methods and makes every object by hand. Anestis is inspired by his environment, the urban landscape, the roads, trees, and buildings, which he translates into artworks. "My first solo show called Epismaltosi took place at Nilufar Gallery in Milan, and is a moment I will cherish forever," he says.

Do you remember the moment when you thought of following this path?
There was no specifically defining moment. Time slowly guided me towards this point. This transition is still ongoing, as these things happen with a gentle movement forwards.
How did you launch your career as a ceramicist?
It is more about me creating and for now, the material is clay. Perhaps in the future I will deal with other materials! I would not describe myself as a ceramicist, but rather as having an artistic expression that is through ceramics at this time.
What are your unique skills?
I am still learning many methods and have not settled on any one in particular. I am constantly removing and adding. If I have to answer what my skills are, I would have to say that they all arise through my intuition and emotional intelligence.
What do you love most about your craft?
The time that it gives me to spend with my thoughts. This peace allows me to create.

Athens: the birthplace of the amphora
1 location
Athens and craftsmanship have always gone hand in hand. In an environment where the city nurtures artistic experimentation, ancient Greek artisans created the first amphorae – storing jars made of ceramics, metal and stone. On our itinerary you will find ceramicists and silversmiths who imitate classical techniques, while modernising the shape and form of this ancient vessel.
