Dsnú Design
Jewellery maker | Madrid, Spain

In praise of the essential

  • Ana and David work together to make mixed material jewellery and ceramic objects
  • In 2015 they founded Dsnú, their joint jewellery studio
  • They are inspired by nature and the combination of different materials

Both Ana Martínez and David De Felipe share an academic background in artistic disciplines, which led them to designing and making jewellery together. A dynamic duo, they each master different techniques. Ana specialises in handmaking jewellery pieces and David in ceramics, painting and sculpture. As a result, their creations combine the use of metal and porcelain. Inspired by nature and its colours, architecture and the Mediterranean, Dsnú jewellery echoes a design aiming at the essential with a timeless inner character. They consider themselves designers and makers, from their studio and haven in the Madrid Sierra.

Why did you embrace this craft?
Ana: Having always been fascinated by design and craftsmanship, I focused my studies in art jewellery. I was seduced by the idea of being able to carry out my own designs, crafting pieces with my hands from start to finish, from the first sketch to the final piece.
Did you learn from a master?
David: My background is eclectic, comprising several artistic disciplines: ceramics, engraving, sculpture. This has allowed me to learn from different people and channel my skills and vision. To me, learning should be a permanent activity in which nature can be our best teacher.
How would you define what you do?
Ana: The name Dsnú stands for 'naked design' which is what we aim for. We look for subtlety, subtracting all the unnecessary, and focus on the essence of the materials that we use and the creation of timeless, emotive pieces.
What does 'well made' mean to you?
David: For me something is objectively well made when it correctly fulfils the function for which it has been designed. On a more personal level, I also consider it important that it spark an emotion in those who contemplate it, both aesthetically and conceptually.
